Migrants as Messengers Association in The Gambia
Migrants as Messengers Association in The Gambia (MaM) was founded by returnee migrants who embarked on the irregular route commonly known as the “backway”, as well as survivors of human trafficking. Formed in 2022, The Migrants as Messengers Association in The Gambia was born from the Migrants as Messengers peer to peer awareness raising project that was implemented by IOM and more than 400 returnee migrants in seven countries in West Africa which sought to empower young people to make informed migration related decisions. The advantage of the MaM Association The Gambia is that we have key information about the irregular journey, our stories and testimonies are key during awareness raising and community sensitizations.
As young people with a mission to raise awareness on the dangers of irregular migration with vast knowledge from great minds, our interventions seek to address issues of youth development, stigma and discrimination. This shall be done through sensitizations, information sharing, community outreach activities, press and media engagement.
- Raise community awareness on the risks and dangers of irregular migration through sharing of candid testimonies and outreach activities through communities, schools and radio talk shows and other sensitization activities.
- Encourage the development of young people by organizing trainings and reaching out to entrepreneurship organizations so that young people can benefit from such skill-building opportunities.
- Encourage and promote partnerships and networking with sister associations, organizations, and other partners.
- Encourage, develop and promote community building in the reintegration of returnees. This includes supporting our fellow migrants to be socially reintegrated and advocating for psychosocial support.
